[ROBERT D. KAPLAN, a National Correspondent for The Atlantic and a Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, in Washington, D.C., is writing a book on the Indian Ocean. He recently was the Class of 1960 Distinguished Visiting Professor in National Security at the U.S. Naval Academy].
Indian Ocean finds ‘eyebrows’ raised in psyche of nations; an ocean named after India. It is one of the major components in dictating global strategy. India and its Navy is seized of the facts relating to the Indian Ocean, and is ever involved in guarding it within its means. ‘World Biggies’ always have their presence in the Ocean and would wish to continue on any pretext. Robert brings-in some straight facts in his research leading to a book on the Indian Ocean to be written by him. The Article should interest students of Military History, specially the Indian Defence Strategists. Some excerpts:
“Already the world’s pre-eminent energy and trade interstate seaway, the Indian Ocean will matter even more as India and China enter into a dynamic great-power rivalry in these waters”.
“More than just a geographic feature, the Indian Ocean is also an idea. It combines the centrality of Islam with global energy politics and the rise of India and China to reveal a multilayered, multipolar world”.
“The United States will have to keep the peace and help guard the global commons -- interdicting terrorists, pirates, and smugglers; providing humanitarian assistance; managing the competition between India and China".
“The document Marine Corps Vision and Strategy 2025 also concluded that the Indian Ocean and its adjacent waters will be a central theater of global conflict and competition this century”.
